One Little Bird

January 27, 2012

As told by Savannah Brown, certified wildlife rehabilitator and animal care specialist at the WNC Nature Center

The distinctive features of Fulica americana

This time of year, our small lakes and ponds will be dotted with black, chicken-like birds. These odd little birds that mingle with resident ducks and geese can be distinguished by their sharp, pale, pointed bills with a red or brown band around the end and their red eyes. What is this peculiar little creature that looks like a cross between a chicken and a duck?

. . . Where We’re Going

January 23, 2012

The Trillium Trail in autumn

If you’ve ever hiked the Trillium Trail here at the WNC Nature Center, you probably found it to be a pleasant hike full of bends and curves through the forest. An endearing aspect of the trail is that, though it is only 2/3 of a mile long, it feels as if you have wound deep into the forest because you cannot see very far ahead of you. Each turn affords a new look – the new staircase, a Cooper’s hawk in a nearby poplar, a bend of the Swannanoa River.

Moving forward into the new year is comparable to taking this walk through the trees. You know where the trail goes and what you’ll see – essentially. But when, where, and how extraordinary it will be when you arrive are all discoveries you make along the way. At the Nature Center, we have a trail in mind. The Nature Center is looking forward to the journey into 2012.

Pisgah and Mitchell, the WNC Nature Center cougars

When a cougar pounces, it uses its powerful hindquarters and long tail to bound up to the length of a school bus. White-tailed deer are capable of leaping five and six foot fences from a virtual stand still. Frog skeletons and muscles have been specially designed to make them the best jumpers of all vertebrates.

Sometimes it seems our days and weeks and months move in the same manner. I started my AmeriCorps term at the WNC Nature Center September 1, and it feels like all I did was turn around and we’ve nearly leapt through December. They say time flies when you’re having fun, after all. Working with the Friends of the Nature Center has been nothing if not exciting this year, and even well before I arrived for AmeriCorps, 2011 was moving forward in great leaps and powerful bounds.
